Base for Cape Cod and Islands

Hi There,

We%26#39;re planning on touring around New England and were going to spend 4 days in Cape Cod area around 17th July. We%26#39;re a family with 2 teenage boys.

We wondered where would be a good base for trips to Martha%26#39;s Vineyard, Nantucket, Cape Cod Rail Trail and visiting a good beach on Cape Cod. We%26#39;d prefer a quietish, picturesque locations but with easy access to restaurants etc I wondered about staying somewhere like Wellfleet but thought it might be very conjested to then travel to the islands for day trips.

Any recommendations on hotels with apartments/suites for the family would also be appreciated as I%26#39;m struggling with this also !

Cheers

Tim

Base for Cape Cod and Islands

Check out Captain Gosnold Village Cottage Colony (captaingosnold.com) in Hyannis. These are lovely Cape Cod cottages in a quiet compound near area beaches (Craigville Beach is one of the best) and within walking distance to ferries to the islands. There are also many excellent restaurants nearby in Hyannis. They have 2 and 3 bedroom cottages and prices are quite reasonable for high season. This will be a quintessential Cape Cod experience and much nicer than a boxy, cookie cutter hotel room.

If you are only going to the cape for 4 days and want to spend 2 of them taking ferries to the islands then Wellfleet is too far removed from the ferries. On the other hand, you could stay in Wellfleet and spend the entire 4 days on fabulous National Seashore beaches, take day trips to Provincetown to whalewatch and dune tour, Chatham to see take a seal cruise and walk around town. Rent some bikes, or kayak Nauset Marsh, go to the Wellfleet Audubon Sanctuary etc. Try looking at the Wellfleet Chamber of Commerce site where local lodging is listed www.wellfleetchamber.com

You don%26#39;t really need to go to the islands to get an %26#39;island felling'; ....just go to the outer cape!

I agree with yellowbird.

It seems like trips to the islands may be a top priority for you. The Captain Gosnold Cottages are a great suggestion. They are spacious, well kept and the grounds are beautiful. There is also an nice pool. The one bedroom cottages also have either a sofa bed or 2 day beds in the living room which could still work for you if you want to be more budget conscious. The islands offer a completely different experience from Cape Cod and they are not even similar to each other, but are beautiful and should be experienced if that is, indeed, a priority for you. There is also plenty to see and do in the Hyannis area as the captaingosnold.com site will show you.

Thanks for the advice so far. Touring the islands was just an idea but It sounds like there is more than enough to do on Cape Cod so am now more inclined to stay around Wellfleet as you are suggesting.

Anyone got any suggestions on good family accomodation around Wellfleet at a reasonable price ?

A good, reasonably priced place for families in Wellfleet is Even`tide Motel and Cottages. Check eventidemotel.com

For something more authentic and not so commercial why not stay at a small B+B? Try Herring River Gallery and Guests in North Wellfleet. http://www.rmhammerquist.com You could take two rooms in the antique main house and enjoy the lovely yard and warm, gracious hosts! (I have not stayed there with children but I think they do allow teenagers)

You will love the outer cape!

Thanks for all the advice. We%26#39;ll probably go with the Herring River Gallery B%26amp;B. Will let you know how we find it and the Outer Cape.

Cheers
