I am staying in Southie with my fiance%26#39;s friend this weekend. We want to take her out to a nice meal as a ';Thank You.'; Are there any good, hip, reasonably priced eateries near there? No pub grub or pizza, but anything else will be of great assistance.
Thanks!

HI Kevin,
Do you like Italian? Try Cafe Porto Bello on East Broadway. Lots of the bars like the Beer Garden or The Playwright serve food but it%26#39;s mostly pub food. Porto Bello is small so there might be a wait. it%26#39;s worth it. they have a nice menu and a good wine list. best of all it%26#39;s relatively cheap.

Thanks, Healey04. Italian might be nice, though my fiance is on a vicious diet right now. I%26#39;ll check in with her and see. Anyone else have a good eatery?
Kevin,
i%26#39;m guessing the fiance%26#39;s friend is anti-carbs. okay. no problem. hop in a cab for a short ride over to the south end. the south end has many amazing restaurants.
Union Bar and Grille, Sibling Rivalry, Mistral, and Icarus to name a few.
This wine bar is quite good, or at least the last time I was there it was!

SOUTH takes guests on a tasteful tour of the United States without leaving town. Executive Chef Jerome Watkins travels to the culinary capitals of the United States -- Los Angeles, New Orleans, Chicago, San Francisco and New York City and returns with ideas that result in a varied menu of new food experiences. A lively bistro atmosphere. Menu selections include fresh seafood, pastas, steaks and chops.

There%26#39;s a Polish restaurant that%26#39;s been in Southie for about a year and from what I understand about it, it%26#39;s absolutely awesome. It%26#39;s very quaint and cozy and located at 611 Dorchester Ave. 617 269-0110. Call to make reservations as the weekend is getting closer and closer! You can read about it here to see what you think:

The Cafe Porto Bello as the previous poster suggested to you is very good, it%26#39;s one of my favorite restaurants in Southie IF you can get in the door, it%26#39;s very small, cozy and just wonderful all around. Too bad you can%26#39;t go there, but I understand where you%26#39;re coming from, it%26#39;s not a place for any one on a diet, especially a lo-carb diet, so definitely forget about it. Half my friends and I are doing the same thing these days AND I might add, we%26#39;re doing good too.
SO I have another suggestion for you and they have a fantastic menu for all the dieters and non-dieters to boot. You could check out the Daily Catch. Don%26#39;t forget South Boston extends all the way in to the Financial District and the Daily Catch which is located at 2 Northern Ave. near the Moakley Federal Courthouse would be ideal! It%26#39;s a nice time of year to go there too:

Another place to consider is Amrheins. It%26#39;s located at 80 W. Broadway in South Boston it was always very good, although it%26#39;s been renovated and all that in the last few years and under new management from what I%26#39;ve been told. I%26#39;m hearing it%26#39;s okay, just not what it used to be. It was excellent years ago and a lot of politicians would drop in for lunch or dinner quite a bit. You had no idea who was going to sit down next to you, it was always a really fun place to go through the years. It was pretty comical because we%26#39;d go there for dinner and we met some really funny charming characters and had the most hilarious conversations with so many of them.
10 minutes away and only about 3 miles if that on Columbus Avenue in Boston%26#39;s South End is the House of Siam. It won Best of Boston SO many times. In fact, it won this past year again (2006). It%26#39;s got about 10 different types of vegetarian plates, 30 different types of seafood plates. They%26#39;re open every day for lunch %26amp; dinner PLUS they deliver which is the bottom line with this last suggestion for you, (they deliver!) I wanted to make sure you knew about this last comment good, JUST in case you decide to stay in Southie at your friends place and chill out for the night!
I%26#39;m sure you%26#39;ll be able to find a nice restaurant over there. They might even have one right near your friends street so you won%26#39;t have to drive that far.
Have a great time, keep us posted on where you ended up going!

An interesting French Wine Bar is located near South Station at 129 South st., in downtown Boston. It%26#39;s a hop, skip %26amp; a jump from L Street in Southie by the way. It%26#39;s on this particular top 100 site, it%26#39;s called ';Les Zygomates';
