Im staying at the Millennium Bostonian Hotel Boston. I think I know the answer but I was to be re-assured. Is it ok not to rent a car and just back pack it around town? How safe is the neighborhood etc. We are planning on just walking the downtown area for a couple of days. Suggestions
Getting around Boston
You definitely do not want or need a car. Most everything is walkable and what isn%26#39;t you can get to on the ';T';. The area is quite safe, but be aware of your surroundings as you would in any city.
Your hotel is across the street from Quincy Market and Fanueil. In addition, the Haymarket is right in front of your hotel on Friday and Saturday. The North End and Waterfront are but a 5 minute walk. Downtown Crossing and the Common are about 10 minutes.
Hope you enjoy enverything!
Getting around Boston
I agree with Alan save your money because you will not find anywhere cheap to park.
As a fellow Bostonian, I agree. DON%26#39;T rent a car. The neighborhood is absolutely fine and lots of fun things to do/places to eat. You%26#39;ll be fine as long as you bring comfy shoes and don%26#39;t mind taking the subway every now and then.
Have FUN!!!
Again, no car! It%26#39;s very easy to navigate. So much within walking distance- North End, Faneuil Hall bars, Downtown Crossing, Boston Common, Christopher Columbus Park, Aquarium. For further afiield like going to Fenway, take the T from Haymarket nearby (Orange and Green lines.) Neighborhood is great. North End is lovely to stroll through and you%26#39;re 5 mins from it. The Cafe Paradiso on Hanover Street has a lovely coffee. Modern Pastry next door has the best cannoli. The freedom trail is right beside you. Follow that to Charlestown and the USS Constitution and Cassein Young and that%26#39;s great too. Once you%26#39;re out there, check out the Warren Tavern nearby for lunch.
No car! If you rent a car, you could waste untold amounts of time stuck in traffic and looking for parking and huge amounts of money paying for parking. Why bother? The T is super convenient.
Hi,
You can obtain a 7-day ';link PAss'; Charlie Card through mbta.com for $15 that gives you unlimited rides on the subway, bus, inner-harbor ferry, and some lines on the commuter rail.
The garage will charge you $35-$40 a night. The rental will be $35 a day, plus the gas, plus the tickets you%26#39;ll inevitably acquire trying to park in Boston. Sounds like a no-brainer.
Just in case you have any lingering doubts at all --- based on where you are staying a car would be a burden, not a convenience! Also, the neighborhood is very safe with activity day and night.
Everyone%26#39;s right -- no car!! The T can take you everywhere, including to Cambridge (Harvard Square). Even if you want to go to outlying towns like Concord, you can still take commuter rail or busses everywhere you need to go.
Skip the ';cah'; and the hassle of trying to ';pahk';. You are in a great spot.
I agree with them all. DO NOT need cars, just take T and buses. Get yourself a weekly pass for MBTA, and you can travel around without any problem. Do aware that the Green line and the bus lines in the Fenways area will be pack during the Red Sox Game. So if you are not going to the game try to watch out for those schedule.
