lodging in Brookline or Newton

We%26#39;ll be visiting family so will probably stay in Brookline or Newton. How long does it take to get into the city on the T? Will it be a big inconvenience for us (we%26#39;re a young couple who are leaving our kids at home) or would it be much preferable to stay in the city?

It%26#39;s difficult to answer without knowing specifically where you will be in Brookline or Newton, but in general, Brookline and Newton are serviced by the Green Line ';T';. These are trolleys that go underground and become part of the subway in the Downtown Area but are surface lines in Brookline and Newton. Thus they tend to be impacted by traffic and are stopping frequently. So while they are ';cute';, they also tend to be slow. Other than that, they are not a ';big inconvenience';, as you put it, although I have to put my own spin on that definition.

My personal preference is to stay in the city so you don%26#39;t have to ';commute';, but that obviously comes at a bigger cost.

I often visit friends in Brookline and love staying at the Courtyard Marriot. The hotel is clean and the rooms are larger than downtown rooms. Brookline has great resturaunts and shops.(Finale is a must for dessert)! The area is safe. The T is directly across from the hotel. It takes about 15 minutes to get downtown. Newton is farther out, and to my knowledge, there are no hotels within walking distance to the T.

I have stayed downtown recently at the Sheraton. The hotel is connected to the Copley Mall. Our room was small and dingy but the location was so great that we didn%26#39;t care. The Westin might be a nicer choice for a romantic weekend.

I live in Brookline, and I second the Courtyard Marriot in Coolidge Corner. It is on the C branch of the Green Line and about 25 min to downtown. The area is great, a lot to do in Brookline as well as in Boston. There is also a Holiday Inn at the next stop ';inbound'; (toward the city) that my family usually stays at when they all come (4-5 people), but it%26#39;s not as nice as the Marriott. In Newton, there is also a Holiday Inn at the Riverside T stop, the last stop on the D branch of the Green Line. That will take more like 40-50 min into downtown.

If you are planning to be downtown or in Back Bay, then staying in Brookline is not a long trip. There is also a bus from Coolidge Corner to Harvard Square that takes about 25 min as well.
