For our anniversary we%26#39;ve planned a trip to Boston and booked at the Quincy Marriott-we got a great rate and are using some points as well. We figured this was a good location because we plan to use one day visiting Martha%26#39;s Vineyard and/or Nantucket- plus we won%26#39;t have to pay the ridiculous parking charges of the downtown hotels. We know there%26#39;s a T station less than a mile from the hotel which we plan to use when we%26#39;re going into Boston.
I need opinions- should this location be ok? I%26#39;m starting to question it after reading some of the other threads. Thanks for any help.
Staying in Quincy- Too out of the way???
I%26#39;d be inclined to want to stay in town. You%26#39;re kind of in the middle of nowhere in Quincy, and Boston is a great place to get out and walk -- as opposed to get on the T and ride.
The Red Line is okay for getting into town, and it%26#39;s relatively safe, but it may not suit everyone.
There%26#39;s Marriott Courtyard on Tremont Street, I%26#39;ve stayed there -- and run meetings there. Excellent location near theaters and the Public Gardens. Yes, parking will be expensive, but maybe you can leave your car at one of the less-expensive garages.
Staying in Quincy- Too out of the way???
Is it cool to stay downtown in the thick of things? Of course, but if you factor in parking fees, it can be expensive. If money is an issue, hotels in places like Quincy can make a Boston vacatin do-able.
Quincy isn%26#39;t that far out. It%26#39;s about a half hour in by T--faster if you catch the Commuter Rail in Braintree or at Quincy Center-- and the ride is pretty, outdoors and includes a nice stretch over the Neponset River. It%26#39;s also convenient to the JFK UMass Stop, the home of the JFK LIbrary.
This is one of those things: downtown is great, but if you%26#39;re saving a lot of money staying in Quincy and if you have a car to deal with the whole trip, and you%26#39;re planning on seeing other South Shore destinations, then Quincy isn%26#39;t a bad deal. It%26#39;s not Rockland or Plymouth or anyplace very far out.
Quincy also has some historic sites of its own and there%26#39;s a big mall not far from your hotel. You can drive along the coast and up into Boston and visit Castle Island (Wollaston Beach to Morrissey to Day Blvd). Castle Island is a GREAT spot most tourists miss.
We just visited the Boston area for the first time in early April and we stayed in Plymouth because of the exhorbitant cost of lodging and parking in Boston. Plymouth is even farther out than Quincy and we loved staying there and didn%26#39;t mind at all parking at the Quincy Adams station and taking the T into Boston, in fact it was kind of nice being able to leave the city behind in the evening and go back to the relative peace and quiet of Plymouth. Also, on the days when we headed in the opposite direction from Boston to see Cape Cod, Newport, etc. we didn%26#39;t have to deal with any morning rush hour traffic. If we ever go back, I would definitely stay in an outlying area again. Boston is awesome, but I felt that we experienced more by visiting there and staying somewhere outside of town. Riding the T was a fun experience for us, being from the upper Midwest where subways are pretty much unheard of, and it was nice to sit down and let someone else drive.
Be aware that if you`re going into Boston on a weekday, the Quincy Adams T station can fill up fairly early in the morning. Weekends aren`t a problem.
We rode the T into Boston on two different weekdays. We first tried the Braintree station, since it was the most outlying and closest to Plymouth where we were staying. It was full, so we drove on up to Quincy Adams. On both days, we were able to find a spot, once at around 9:00 AM and the other time at around noon. The first time it was only full up to the fourth level and the second time it was full up to the rooftop, but there were plenty of spaces left up there. Maybe we just got lucky or something.
The Quincy Marriott has a shuttle to the T.... parking isn%26#39;t an issue if you%26#39;re staying at any of those hotels in Quincy or Braintree
Thanks for all the input. I feel good about our choice now. We%26#39;ll be visiting Friday to Monday so it sounds like we shouldn%26#39;t have any problem with the T.
Good choice on the Qunicy Marriott its a great hotel, and like previous posters say its close to Commuter rail or Red Line stations and free parking at the hotel beats trying to park in town.
Happy Anniversary!
If you%26#39;re going to take a trip to Martha%26#39;s Vineyard, check peterpanbus.com from Boston South Station (on the Quincy Red Line) direct to the Woods Hole ferry. Parking your car at Woods Hole for the ferry is going to be a headache, and $$. You will most likely have to park off site and take a shuttle bus to the ferry terminal. If you do decide to drive your car, try to check parking availability ahead of time. During the busiest weeks of summer, It%26#39;s not uncommon for all the Steamship Authority parking lots to completely fill and then you%26#39;re out of luck.
For a day-trip, the bus might not be as convenient time-wise, but it%26#39;s worth a look.
Hi,
I live in Quincy and I can tell you that the Marriott is a lovely hotel, although it%26#39;s not in the ';middle'; of things, being off on a hillside in an office park. I think as long as you are fine with not being downtown, you will enjoy your stay there.
But, it%26#39;s 1 minute to the Highway to Cape Cod, and .5 miles to the Red Line.
If you like history, you might consider visiting the John Adams National Historic Park in Quincy Center. It%26#39;s a great museum and they have some wonderful artifacts of John Adams%26#39; life. The visitor center is directly across the street from the Quincy Center Red Line station.
