Howdy all,
I really could use some help and I was wondering if someone in the area could give me a few pointers. I am leaving in about a week to spend four weeks in Woods Hole for a vet program at the marine biological lab. I am from Oklahoma and I know the weather here is pretty warm and it%26#39;s been rainy but I have no idea how to prepare for the weather out there. Anyone willing to share some tips on what I should pack? I don%26#39;t want to bring the wrong clothing. I would really really, appreciate it! :) Thanks so much!
What should I bring to wear?
May 15-June 15 or so...figure at least mid to upper 60%26#39;s during the day, probably more in the 70%26#39;s, chance of hitting 80. Cooler at night, probably low 60%26#39;s, but I doubt anything in the 50%26#39;s. Woods Hole is right on the water, so forecast temperatures for the region might not reflect the cooler breeze off the water. Rain...probably sometime while you%26#39;re here, but only when a weather system comes through.
What should I bring to wear?
Jeans, shorts and tee shirts go everywhere on Cape Cod. Casual cotton, no ironing..wrinkles are fine! Layer your clothing since nights on Cape Cod by the water can be cool, even in July and August. So having a long-sleeve tee over a short-sleeve tee topped with a sweat shirt or sweater with a hood is not a bad idea. You will often see folks walking around with clothing tied around their waist that was shed as the day warmed up or will be used when the sun goes down or the fog rolls in! Bring a sturdy hat to keep the sun out of your eyes and off your face and sunglasses that have UV protection...especially if you will be on the water. By the way, if you will be on the water a lot bring a heavy jacket and gloves.....no kidding. The water temp is only in the 50%26#39;s and if the fog rolls in it%26#39;s really cold out there!!!
Rubber-soled, casual shoes and sandals for your feet...you can pick up an inexpensive pair of flip-flops for the beach when you get here. A few pair of cotton socks is a good idea.
One rain jacket with a hood is nice....forget an umbrella...it%26#39;s too windy on the cape if it rains and a slicker with hood will keep you dryer.
If you really want to bring one nice outfit in case you go someplace where you will need to dress up a bit, keep in mind that jacket and tie for men (or women) and high heels and fancy dresses for women (or sometimes men :-) are really never worn on Cape Cod unless there is special gala ball or reception. I will assume you are a female because men never seem to worry about what to pack....if you have one pair of low heeled strappy sandals and a nice pair of cropped pants or a skirt with a cute top and nice sweater, you will be all set for the fanciest night out on Cape Cod!!!
And by all means bring your bikini!!
Very good, detailed advice from yellowbird – I usually just tell people to dress like you’re headed to a J. Crew photo shoot and you’ll fit right in.
re: JCREW, LOL!!!!!!!!!! You%26#39;re right!
WOW! Thanks everyone, so much. Your help is greatly appreciated and I am starting to feel so much better about packing. :) I am so excited to be spending a whole month in Cape Cod and now I feel like I will be better prepared for it. Yeah!
