Need Boston Geography 101

Is there a difference between the South End and South Boston? What is the area around E. Broadway and L Street called? Are there any good, hip, reasonably priced eateries near there? Thanks.

Yes, there is a huge difference between the South End and South Boston... the South End was a rough area that has in the last few decades significantly gentrified. South Boston -- or ';Southie'; -- is the Irish area that still has its share of troubles, although for better or for worse is starting to be gentrified as well. E. Broadway and L St is in South Boston. I don%26#39;t go to Southie that often, so I can%26#39;t be of much help with restaurants. I know there%26#39;s some new cafes and some old-time Irish pubs...

Thanks, carab20! That explains a lot. Does anyone else have any Southie food recommendations? No pub grub or pizza, but anything else will be of great assistance.

Southie is a GREAT PLACE. There are loads of places to eat along broadway, but I%26#39;m a pub fan, so... someone else out there will have better recommendations than I. If you go to Southie, be sure to visit Castle Island and Carson Beach.

In Southie, there%26#39;s always Amrheins. It%26#39;s been there for decades. I ate there once when I was in college. Is it still considered to be good?

As far as I know, Amrein%26#39;s (sp) is still there and doing well. It%26#39;s still a meeting location for Southie pols.

Here%26#39;s a link to a list of restaurants in Southie:

N.B.: Jimmy%26#39;s Harborside has gone to that great fish fry in the sky..pity. but the others on the list are fairly current.

South Boston is accessible via the Summer Street bridge over the Fort Point Channel, or Congress Street to the same general vicinity. The South End begins at Tremont Street, one block over from Columbus from the Back Bay.

As stated previously they are completely different and also note that they are not even near each other.

Actually, they really ARE near to each other.
