Stop off on train journey between Boston & New York?

Can anyone recommend a good place to stop for a couple of days on the train journey between Boston and New York? We have looked at a few places such as New Haven and New London but are a bit confused as to where would be best to go and get a reasonably priced central hotel? Any ideas?

HI,

Interestingly, there was an identical question on this forum earlier in the week from a couple in Manhattan wanting to break the trip up with a midway stop. I%26#39;ll give you the answer I gave them: Mystic, CT. A nice seaside town with restaurants and shops. A good place to relax and get away from it all. The regional Amtrak line stops at the Mystic station.

I agree with Healey: Mystic is very pleasant.

Bear in mind that the total trip is between 3.5 and 5 hours in total, so this is not a long trip. Providence Rhode Island is also on the way (at least for the way the trains go).

Just to keep in mind: Not every regional train makes the Mystic stop, so if you go, make sure to schedule for one that does.

I%26#39;ve never been to Mystic, so my vote for a stop would be New Haven. Despite others who may not like it, it has a lot of great restaurants and is definitely becoming increasingly more hip in the past 5 yrs. It%26#39;s also interesting to walk around the Yale campus or visit museums there. However, the hotels there are the downside.... The Omni would be the best place to stay.

Either place would be convenient from Boston%26#39;s train. You%26#39;d have to check your schedule of the one you hook up with to make sure you%26#39;re stopping at either of these places first. I personally think New London, CT. has quite a lot more choices for places to stay. The Radisson Hotel, the Holiday Inn, the Queen Anne Inn, the Lighthouse Inn Resort and they even have their own private beach to boot! ';Guthrie beach'; AND they supply beach chairs and umbrella%26#39;s on top of that. Go to this site to check it out:

A lot of shops and more neat restaurant choices here. They have a Ruth Chris%26#39; Steakhouse and Timothy%26#39;s restaurant in the Lighthouse Inn as well as all kinds of neat cafes and bistros within this whole area of New London.

So think about it and enjoy yourselves, that%26#39;s the most important thing with it all. I checked New London out because it was via the Acela Express train route from Boston%26#39;s South Station. I also checked the mileage from Boston and it%26#39;s only 2 hours away; which wouldn%26#39;t be too bad, it would be a good break between Boston and New York if you do decide to stay any where in the New London area.

Thanks to all who replied - your info has been really useful - we are now trying to decide between Radisson in New London or Howard Johnson in Mystic. When we get there we will toast you all with a wee dram!

Mystic is a very nice mid/small town. If I recall the Howard Johnson%26#39;s is out near the highway. Take a look at The Whaler%26#39;s Inn right in the center of town. It%26#39;s very nice and walkable to almost everything.

Consider visiting the reknowned Mystic Seaport and see life in a whaling town as it used to be. It%26#39;s well worth the visit.
