The Perfect Storm

I saw the movie The Perfect Storm and am interested in the sites from the movie. I went up last July and found the memorial, the one on Stacy Bld., but that was it. I hear that there is a floating memorial boat in the harbor. I couldn%26#39;t find an entrace to where it was or where the boat was docked. I went to St. Peters and to Soloman Jacobs, saw where the boats came in and out to the left, but there%26#39;s a bunch of boat yards. Can anybody tell me where I can get in to view this? Also, I was wondering, inside city hall, where they have all the names of the fisherman that died at sea, are you allowed to take pictures? Thanks.

Very interesting questions to me, I was hoping that a local seaman from Gloucester might be able to shed some light on your questions, the area, and add some local insight on the Perfect Storm.

But, for now, you’ll have to settle for my limited knowledge of Gloucester as a summer resident with only a fair knowledge of the city (I do know the golf course fairly well) and basic knowledge of the storm (I read the book and saw the movie).

First, the focal point of the movie (besides the water/boat) was a bar on Roger St called the Crow’s Nest. This bar is still there and is a very rough place, not a place you want to go for those afternoon umbrella drinks (I think they only sell Budweiser in bottles). They had so many tourist dropping by to gawk, they built a replica of the bar across the street for the tourist (no sure it’s still there). I would guess, the floating memorial is right there in Harbor Cove (but I’m guessing, I’ve never seen it). Just east of the bar, on the water, is a small road or loop called Harbor Loop, I believe you can get tourist information there and they should be able point out the memorial.

Second, regarding pictures at city hall, I can’t imagine this would be an issue. I assume you know the other Gloucester areas of interest for pictures… the Gloucester Fisherman Statue, Eastern Point, Atlantic Road, Stage Fort Park, and Rocky Neck.

Well, that my take, Gloucester is a wonderful unspoiled commercial fishing city…Enjoy!

The Perfect Storm

The Boat in question is the Lady Grace, the last I knew it was tied up over near the ';Fort'; area. There was talk of making it a museum, but I have not hear about that for years. Legal Seafood owned it at one time (after the movie).

The Crow%26#39;s Nest from the book is right where it has been for the last 30 or more years. It is on Main St, near Rowe%26#39;s Sq. For the shooting of the movie, a bar was built on the dock behind what is now the Maritime Heritage Center, right at the shore end of the dock.

It was taken down, when the movie was complete. It was only a shell.

No one in the Crow%26#39;s Nest will bite you. It is a neighborhood bar, if you want to visit and are nervous about it go in the day time.

Have never hear that photos where not allowed at city hall.

Be aware that city hall is closed weekends. Since it%26#39;s a worthy place to include in your visit, try to go on a weekday.

Was it closed for renovations for a while? It%26#39;s been a while since I was up that way.
