Rochester Hills question

Four Canadian gals heading to Rochester Hills in early August for a couple days shopping, shopping, shopping! Any recommendations on where we can stay - inexpensively so we can spend our $$ shopping!? Any restaurant recs? Thanks.

Rochester Hills question

Is Rochester Hills your shopping destination? Or do you know someone there and that%26#39;s why it%26#39;s your target location? Downtown Rochester is very quaint.

There are lots of chain/budget properties in Troy, Madison Heights, Auburn Hills, Sterling Heights ---- close to RH. Maybe get a suite hotel where you can spread out and enjoy your purchases!

How long are you going to be here? Do you know where you want to shop? Two large places come to mind - Somerset Collection in Troy and Great Lakes Crossing in Auburn Hills. Downtown Birmingham is also quite nice for an outdoor excursion.

TONS of places to eat... if you formulate a battle plan... where you might want to go day-to-day, we here on the Detroit forum can give lots of dining suggestions. Also - tastes and budget should come into play here, too.

And welcome to SE Michigan!!!

Rochester Hills question

We%26#39;ve stayed at the Red Roof Inn in Rochester Hills. It was around $58 a night. Was a very basic but comfortable hotel. Also check out hotwire.com. You can get some really great prices on hotels there. Great Lakes Crossing is GREAT. Lots of stores!! Have fun.

thanks...all I really know is we are going for just two days - leaving here early on Thurs. morning and coming back late Friday afternoon. My friend has been hearing about the shopping at ';Rochester Hills'; and wants to see what it%26#39;s all about - I%26#39;m going along for the ride!

Are you sure it%26#39;s Rochester Hills? Not Auburn Hills, where Great Lakes Crossing is located? Yes, there are some very nice shops in Rochester, but I don%26#39;t think of it as a shopping destination, per ce.

AB

There%26#39;s a ';new'; downtown Rochester built at Adams and University, kitty corner from Meadowbrook/Oakland University. It%26#39;s a mainstreet design mall with a Parisian department store as the anchor as well as many catalog named stores.

It%26#39;s nice - with a few restaurants too!

But it you are going to Rochester, you have to check out the new Papa Joe%26#39;s that recently opened at the corner of Main Street (aka Rochester Rd) and Tienken. It is an upscale gourmet store that offers wine tasting so distinctly unique it%26#39;s a MUST SEE in my book! I know it sounds weird to send you to a glorified grocery story but this one is worth it.

Thanks everyone..I found out it%26#39;s the Village of Rochester Hills our friend has found - www.villageofrochesterhills.com. Website says

';The Village of Rochester Hills is a 375,000-square-foot outdoor shopping district in the heart of Rochester Hills, Michigan. Set up much like a bustling downtown, the Village of Rochester Hills is the first in Michigan to utilize the lifestyle streetscape concept. ';

Anyone been here? Is it a full days excursion? near anything else interesting?

I%26#39;m not into shopping so my opinion may not count, but I have driven through the Village of RH and it is not very big. There are a couple major stores and several smaller shops, but I don%26#39;t think it would be a full day destination.

As mentioned Great Lakes Crossing and Somerset Collection are in the area 10 minutes or so north and south of Rochester Hills. Both are huge.

All are convenient to Interstate 75 where you can find just about every chain hotel from Red Roof to Hilton. Target Troy or Auburn Hills for your search cities.

I can%26#39;t speak to it personally --- but it looks like they%26#39;re trying to give mall shopping with a downtown/city feel. The anchor store is Parisian - it%26#39;s a nice dept store .... I would say somewhere between Macy%26#39;s and Nordstrom. But the other stores don%26#39;t strike me as very unusual - typical mall fare, like Abercrombie, Pottery Barn.

If the weather cooperates, go to the village.... if not go to Great Lakes Crossing or Somerset Collection. You could probably do two of the three. Check out the stores and decide what it is you want to go after. They all have web sites.

Lots of places to eat - what kind of food do you like?

Another choice would be downtown Birmingham, again, weather permitting, which is a real downtown albeit small.. with some interesting and high-end shops.

The Village of Rochester Hills is a nice shopping center, especially when the weather cooperates and it has lots of nice/fun places to eat (my favorite is Kruse and Muer - also located in downtown Rochester) but most of the stores there are mainstream stores you%26#39;d find at any upscale mall. If you want a nice day of shopping in a fun outdoor environment, I%26#39;d go there, but if you want bargains I%26#39;d head to Great Lakes Crossing or Birch Run. There is a Talbots outlet at GLC and they always have great deals but it%26#39;s not in the mall. It%26#39;s across the street (Baldwin), NE of the mall in the plaza with Kohl%26#39;s, Old Navy, Joe%26#39;s Crab Shack, etc.

Downtown Rochester is very quaint and also has some good restaurants and most of the stores are not chains - but depending what you%26#39;re looking for, probably not a whole day%26#39;s worth - and most stores aren%26#39;t open Sundays..

Downtown Birmingham is also very quaint and has lots of great places to eat and many more stores than downtown Rochester - most of which are pretty upscale.

As for places to stay, there is a Best Western Concord Inn on Crooks - just off M59 (good for Rochester Hills) and there are a few places by Oakland Mall (Madison Heights) and lots of places in Auburn Hills on Opdyke. (Several are suite hotels). Hotwire is probably a great place to get a bargain. You can see what others are getting on www.biddingfor travel.com and www.betterbidding.com. As I live in the area I haven%26#39;t stayed in any of the hotels but can ask around on good values. Will you be coming during the week or over the weekend?
