Hi Platty3,
Yes the Berkshires are in the western part of the State...
This is an excellent site to check out...there%26#39;s a beautiful State Park in Uxbridge....

State Parks abound in Massachusetts. What kind of activites are you looking for? Some are better for boating/fishing, others for biking or hiking. Purgatory Chasm is a really ineteresting place, and not too far from where you%26#39;ll be.
You can get loads of info on State Parks at mass.gov
thanks for your replys
Strongly consider staying in the Berkshires. The parks are stunning i.e. Ice Glenn in Stockbridge, Beartown state forrest and Monument Mountain in Great Barrington. You have theater in Lenox, old new england in Pittsfield plus lakes (Onota) and parks i.e. Pittsfield State Forrest, October Mtn state forrest (bring a compass). Further north you have North Adams which is an art mecca now(?), capped off by the highest peak in MA, Mt Greylock with breath taking views and hikes. If you cant make it to the Berkshirs? just go to North Hampton MA. Great food, blues clibs, coffee houses, eclectic shops and foreign theaters, its like soho in the country. If I could move to western ma, I would in a second.
I agree that you should consider the Berkshires for a trip some time in the future, but being from the Berkshires, I can tell you that Milford is much closer to eastern Massachusetts than western Massachusetts. It would not be a quick drive to visit on this trip. I would guess it would be 1.25 hrs to 2 hrs drive, depending on where you wanted to visit in the Berkshires.
